Clean fishing nets

Only clean fishing gear can be re-used

One of the first challenges addressed by CIRCULAR OCEAN partners was to find a way to remove the chemical impregnation from the nets and ropes, to obtain clean materials ready for reuse in a variety of sectors. Thanks to the #ChemHack Challenge organised by the Environmental Research Institute at the University of the Highlands and Islands, it was found that current technology allows for successful cleaning, but waste water streams would need to be treated further.

The unique #ChemHack event was a wonderful opportunity to bring together world-class expertise to help solve a practice and pressing issue [the washing of chemicals from nets and ropes].
