Discover the achievements of the 2014-2020 NPA projects

Seven years of cooperation between people, communities, and organisations across thousands of kilometres made a difference in the Northern Periphery and Arctic regions.

Communities´ green energy transition

Using locally available resources to become energy self-sufficient

The LECo project supports small communities in becoming self-sufficient regarding energy. LECo´s Energy Village strategic plan serves as a guide for communities on how to best use locally available renewable energy sources and the Handbook (Suomeksi) contains recommendations to support and accelerate energy transition in small communities.

Wennström’s farm is a large dairy farm situated in Sykäräinen Finland. The owners Ilpo and Tiina Wennström have always been interested in sustainability and renewable technologies, and recently a biogas plant was commissioned on the farm. During the LECo -project a comprehensive feasibility study was carried out regarding the utilization of PV -systems in energy production on large dairy farms in Finland. As a result, local farmers have a broader view regarding the utilization of solar energy and the economic perspective of PV -systems.

Other feasibility studies explored how to replace fossil fuels with renewable alternatives such as wood chips or how to produce fuel for transportation. LECo presents its renewable energy solutions suitable for small rural communities in a podcast.

Lohtaja Energy Cooperative

The Community Sustainable Energy Action Plan (cSEAP) is very useful for Lohtaja. It clearly depicts the potential of renewable energy in the area referring to the areal strategy that aims to promote decentralized electricity and heat production based on renewable energy. The cSEAP of Lohtaja supports the work of Lohtaja’s Energy Cooperative supporting the idea and concept of wood heating in rural areas and urban centres, replacing fossil-based heating and reducing electricity demand for heating.
