Developing more respectful tourism solutions

Sustainability and culture at the forefront of tourism

The ARCTISEN project approached current tourism development in the Arctic through the lens of cultural sensitivity. Culturally sensitive tourism, i.e. tourism that respects local cultures and people, has not yet been established as a concept in Sweden. Based on the interviews with local tourism SMEs in Northern Sweden, the project concluded that an authentic representation of the Sámi culture and an integration of Sámi tourism in the overall development is crucial for a successful tourism development in the region. Learning from other NPA regions, the project compiled tools and resources to help tourism-oriented SMEs in developing products and services that are respectful of local cultures and people. During the benchmarking trip to Sweden, the project presented the idea of a cross-border tourism label and the importance of living sustainably.
