From park to park

Learning practical skills from transnational colleagues

ASCENT helped to launch a new system in Hossa national park that uses visitors’ surveys to monitor and manage the impact of nature tourism in line with ecological, social, and economic sustainability. ASCENT´s contribution has also been acknowledged by the Ministry of the Environment. Inspired by the landscaping work done by the Northern Irish partners, Parks & Wildlife Finland has decided to adopt some of their techniques to divert the path in Oulanka National Park. In return, the Finnish partner introduced timber as a traditional path building material to their Northern Irish colleagues.

Visitor surveys are tightly linked to managing protected areas. The impact of nature tourism can be measured through a number of indicators. Visitor surveys feed data into many of them. In order to take a step towards a more structured monitoring system, the LAC (Limits of Acceptable Change) method has been piloted and launched in Hossa National Park. It will enable PWF to measure the impact of nature tourism, expand monitoring nationwide and report to the Ministry of the Environment.
