Discover the achievements of the 2014-2020 NPA projects
Seven years of cooperation between people, communities, and organisations across thousands of kilometres made a difference in the Northern Periphery and Arctic regions.

Heat transfer to prevent heat loss
An effective solution for efficient energy use in public buildings
Affordable, reliable and efficient energy supply is a major challenge for northern peripheral regions. With the help of sensors, IoT and the “whole-of-community" approach, the SMARCTIC project showed that to reduce energy consumption one must consider the energy needs of the entire community buildings and public infrastructure. The Lappi ice hockey arena and Ounashalli football hall in Rovaniemi are good examples of how energy can be transferred between the neighbouring buildings to prevent heat loss. The energy audit of the buildings showed that these types of large-space public spaces have a common problem of underheating or overheating. In this case, one of the causes is the temperature variation from –30 to +30 degrees in Finland and the variety in the number of people in the space simultaneously. The energy analysis has outlined that the buildings could better cooperate to e.g. use excess heating from one hall to heat the other building or to develop a joint solar energy plant. Waste heat / solar energy calculators were developed by the Lapland University of Applied Sciences and remain available for other interested parties.

Real Estate Company Lappi Areena OyThe project was interesting and timely in terms of the energy crisis, because we are a large energy consumer. We are looking forward to the final report and proposed measures to reduce energy consumption. The cooperation has worked well between us and Lapland UAS.
