Making it Work developed a 9-steps strategy with concrete interventions covering advertising, administration, relocation officer roles, marketing of the rural location, changes to how services are delivered, career development support, support for families and partners, and education and training. A system of “Professional Buddies” provides continuous support and coaching to newly appointed medical staff. Experienced practitioners assist recruits and their families after they move to the community. To provide first-hand information about life in remote communities, Ullapool community together with the Rural Support Team developed a welcome package, which helped increase the number of applicants from 3 to 12.

the nurseThis was the first time nurses had been invited to take part in the rural fellowship days, so we felt quite proud and saw it as a privilege to represent the team. The groups were incredibly inclusive and very welcoming. We were never made to feel like outsiders, and in fact there was genuine interest in who we were and what we did. We felt that the people we met and the opportunity to network was priceless. This was fundamental step to support team cohesion and integration of the wider rural multidisciplinary ‘team’.
