New technologies and innovations for rural manufacturers

South West College in Cookstown developed a diagnostic tool that helps SMEs to detect problems and solutions in manufacturing. Axon Power and Controls used this mechanism to find bottlenecks in the logistics process and to identify the areas that needed to improve if the company wants to expand. With the help of a mentor and a newly developed tool, the family-run cake business Lough Erne Cakes in Enniskillen identified key areas where to reduce energy consumption and costs, such as using a hybrid vehicle or low energy lighting.

The entire management team engaged in a business objectives development workshop using the TARGET decision-based objectives toolkit. That output has formed the backbone of our key initiatives for 2018/9. In addition, the Business Improvement tool was incorporated into our Operations initiatives. Overall, the involvement with the TARGET programme has been very beneficial and the toolkit will be used again in 2019/20 objectives setting.
