NHS Shetland and NHS Western Isles, focused on reducing the social isolation of older people living in remote areas by teaching them how to use communication technologies, such as tablets for sharing pictures with family via social media/email, browsing the internet, online shopping etc. The NHS Western Isles has tested whether a new role of Social Navigator could reduce loneliness and isolation among old people by introducing them to community events such as cooking or singing classes. The Assistive technology centre in Stornoway was developed to raise awareness about how technology can promote independent living, how to be more socially active and live a healthy lifestyle.
Donald Allan MacDonald
pensionerI lost my wife four years ago, and as my family lives on the mainland I became more and more isolated, living in my own home. As an 82-year-old pensioner, I am still in fairly good health, but I didn't know how to find events in the community that I could attend to reduce the loneliness of staying home all day. The Social Navigator interviewed me and told me about local organizations and events that I could attend, which I did. I am very pleased and feel much better.
