Preserving paths to the summit

Learning how to build and maintain hiking trails

Errigal Mountain is facing challenges related with increased number of visitors and unregulated access. To preserve the mountain for the future generations, the Donegal County Council has organized an upskilling programme for local community members and volunteers to teach them how to build and maintain the paths leading to the mountain´s summit. Donegal County Council has also developed a digital visitors monitoring survey to analyse the usage and to discover visitors´ perceptions, experiences and opinions.

The project addresses a real problem of habitat degradation by unsustainable recreation access in a Natura site. In particular, the problem of erosion of blanket bog and wet heath habitats within a Special Area of Conservation. The project has delivered a sustainable solution and a demonstration of best international practice to solve the issue at a local level involving shared knowledge, and the local community and NGOs working in partnership with public authorities.
