Airports in the remote and peripheral areas are vital for local communities, providing accessibility and connectivity to residents. Due to low traffic volume, strong seasonal challenges and ageing aircrafts, these airports are running under higher costs and depend on governmental support. SPARA2020 tested new digital communication technologies such as remote x-ray, and remote tower systems (at Storuman and Hemavan airports) to maximise revenues at these airports and increase their self-sufficiency and long-term resilience. The project worked as a catalyst for a further aviation development in the remote areas and partners until today continue to look for new ways to make remote airports more sustainable.

Region VästerbottenThe report (SPARA Roadmap) addresses all relevant questions of the aviation system in the NPA area and gives a relevant pathway when it comes to the possibilities to ensure a development of the aviation together with a strive to make a change to bio-fuel in the aviation sector. I also think it is important the material will be spread in the EU to give a better understanding of the aviation sector as an important part of the transport sector in our part of the EU.
