Woollen hiking paths

A traditional but forgotten drainage material

When visiting the Northern Irish site, the Norwegian team was taught how to use an ancient natural and environmental-friendly material, sheep wool, for path building. The trial path has been built in the Buerdalen valley, where wool has been used as a bottom layer in the new draining system to prevent soil erosion caused by heavy rain. The trail generated a lot of interest and more actors across Norway expressed their wish to learn more about this traditional, but forgotten technique never used in Norway.

The Heathland Centre at Lygra

The Heathland Centre was able to connect with practitioners from Odda, Voss, Bergen, Mournes (Northern Ireland) and Scotland and managers from all ASCENT partners. The use of sheep wool as a material for paths learnt from Northern Ireland, is of great interest to us and we were able to contribute with our knowledge of heathland management techniques including heather burning and grazing using ancient breeds. The skills gained and network established will be valuable for our future work.
