Connecting literature, technology and tourism

Online festival, literary trails, and other new offerings

Literary tourism is an emerging niche sector within the wider cultural tourism sector. With growing interest and recognition, also comes an increase in business potential. The Spot-Lit project recognised this opportunity and engaged with businesses and organisations operating in the literary tourism sector to help them to develop new literary tourism products, reach wider markets and grow connections.

In Northern Ireland, the Spot-Lit project helped to build the George Russell (better known as A.E.) Annual Festival in Lurgan to be a successful and sustainable literary tourism offering. Together with establishing a stronger online presence, the project also helped to create a literary hub based on AE’s myriad literary connections within a 20–30-mile radius of Lurgan, concluding with developing the A.E. Russell Literary Tour. Another newly developed literary tourism product in the area, and supported by the Spot-Lit projects, is the Digital Guidebook including the Armagh Literary Trail, developed by Armagh Rhymers. The Trail takes visitors through some of the most important literary locations in and around Armagh City, told through the work of the Rhymers.

We found the Programme extremely beneficial developing our offering as above. We very much appreciated how ICBAN designed the programme with the right balance of 'classroom' case studies, expert presentations and mentoring by practitioners sharing valuable experience. Also, how the Programme managers tried to maximize interaction and cross pollination between the various participant groups, even with the challenge of Covid 19. We have no hesitation in recommending ICBAN and Spot-Lit to others.
