Re-seeding urchins

Urchins back in Irish waters

To restore the urchin population in Western and South Ireland, Irish partners have re-seeded 20.000 young sea urchins on Achill Island and in Mullaghmore. Approximately 60% of the new urchins survived and grew well in these selected sites. The Irish partners also tested a new roe enhancement diet for sea urchins, developed by the Norwegian partner. Through trials, Irish farmers increased the value of the urchins by using a more nutritious diet.

Dunmanus Seafood Ltd.

Being a part of the URCHIN project has been of great help and experience when dealing with an extensive network. Being able to supply juvenile sea urchins for the project and being involved in the setting up and running of a land-based trial for roe enhancement has been very worthwhile. The extensive experience of the URCHIN network has led to further synergies and experiences. Dunmanus Seafoods also provided information for different fact sheets and documents along with attending and presenting at the Irish stakeholder meeting.
