Derry City and Strabane District Council adopted IMPROVE’s approach to local planning activities, and engaged with citizens and students. In this way, city planners gained a new perspective on what people need and what they would like to see in the future. The result was a better informed plan for local development that fully met the citizens’ demand. Moving to a more inclusive planning approach helped to reduce the public perception that planning is complicated, officials are hard to contact, and uninterested to public feedback. This positive experience motivated 10 other Councils in to engage more with their citizens.

Strabane AcademyThe IMPROVE project has been hugely beneficial to our students, allowing them to share their views on planning developments within their area for the very first time. The workshops we took part in were stimulating and designed to keep the students attention and to get them excited about participating as active citizens in considering planning decisions. This not only stimulated the students’ interest, but also brought elements of our curriculum to life.
