Virtual medical appointments

Medical consultations via tablets

The Patient Centred Healthcare Teams in 4 municipalities in Troms County started using a videoconferencing system to support patient treatment and follow up on patients outside the hospital. The patients found it very practical as they did not need to travel to visit the doctor, but instead they could have the whole medical team in their living room via videoconference. The staff also experienced better exchange of information and often used tablets to take pictures of patients´ injuries and show it to doctors when they got back to the hospital. After the project had finished, the team continued to offer technical assistance to the medical teams in other municipalities who were interested in using this service. See the video here.

We have been able to participate in the project and contribute to the development of the service. We experience that the service gives improved coordination and exchange of information. We use tablets for many purposes, for instance taking pictures. We often take pictures of ulcers to show to the specialist when we get back to the hospital. The situation will in many cases be clarified and the patient doesn’t have to travel to see a doctor. In one case, a serious illness was discovered.
