Project eCAP
Project Acronym | eCAP |
---|---|
Project Title | eHealth services for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (eCAP) |
Project subsite |
Summary
The need for psychiatric services for children and adolescents generally exceeds service capacity. The eCAP project aims to solve problems in the delivery of mental health promotion and child and adolescent psychiatry services to remote areas. The aim of this project is to develop diagnosis, consultation, supervision, treatment and collaboration between professionals by using modern information technology - videoconferencing (VC) systems and the Development and Wellbeing Assessment, a computerised structured instrument for gathering diagnostic data from families, teachers and young people themselves.
Objectives
The project objectives are to: Develop, test, and disseminate new solutions for services that improve the quality and availability of mental health care for children and adolescents in remote communities. This includes, for example, the use of VC communication systems and remote diagnosis, develop, test and disseminate common evaluation instruments for the documentation of quality experienced by both patients and clinicians, and, develop, test and disseminate innovative technology-driven public services.
Impacts
Tangible
Improved access to services: | In remote areas, the use of video conference makes health care services more accessible to a wider area, brings timely care for children and young people and reduces long waiting times in child and adolescent psychiatry. Patients avoid travelling long distances to see the specialists and as referred by a therapist, young people may feel more safe in their home or community environment during the online sessions and therefore will establish a closer connection with professionals. |
---|---|
Time saving: | The video conference saves time, fuel, travel costs and patients avoid absence from school. The time saved in travelling can now be used more efficiently and therapists can see the patient more often, instead of conventional 45min session, they may have a chat in the morning and then after school. Patients with eating disorders may stay longer periods at home, receiving meal time support on videoconference. |
Intangible
Building institutional capacity: | Multi professional meetings, supervision and educational sessions carried out on videoconference contributed to improved coordination and knowledge acquisition for health care professionals and collaborating partners in the municipalities. In Finland, school nurses and child psychiatrists have through the tutored peer groups exchanged practices and experience on working with aggressive children, children from immigrant families, children with ADHD etc. |
