Summary
The RECENT project aims to increase energy knowledge in rural communities, and help them to have more resilient and energy efficient public infrastructure capable of handling climate change related risks. The project will develop 24 pilot community energy, and energy efficiency projects across 5 NPA partner countries, with focus on the innovative use of community-owned water assets.
Objectives
The objectives of the project are:
To increase the capacity of communities to develop their own solutions for reliable, energy efficient public infrastructure;
To maximise energy asset management, in water services;
Knowledge exchange programme leading to increased awareness and a sustainable public policy;
Robust, sustainable community projects that will be self sufficient post NPA funding.
Impacts
Tangible
Improved access to services: | RECENT Mentoring Service improves access to expert knowledge on sustainable energy communities in a range of NPA regions. This is of great importance as remoteness makes it difficult to access expert knowledge for remote, rural communities. The Recent Virtual Learning Campus compiles materials and good practice from its 24 pilot sites and examples for mentors and communities to share experiences. |
---|---|
Reduced environmental impact: | Project supported local communities to run feasibility studies for optimising district heating, for using the residual heat from a local waste water treatment to heat public buildings, for saving energy and using renewable energy sources in the Botanical Gardens of the University of Oulu, among others. |
Intangible
Influencing policies: | RECENT’s community engagement approach has been adopted by the Scottish government as part of Scottish Hydro Nation Policy, and informed Scottish Water’s “Renewable Energy Guide for Developers & Communities working with Scottish Water”. Through its duration, the project has been informing the MEPs about the progress and presented its results to policy makers and MEPs at the final conference in Brussels. |
