Project Title | Sámi duodji - System development for growth and protection of Sami cultural heritage |
Summary
The Saami civil society has identified a need to explore ways and means on how to protect Sámi people intellectual property rights and to encourage economic growth for the Sámi people when Sámi culture is used commercially. The second objective of the micro project is to build capacity on intellectual property rights in the local communities. There is a need to build strong and resilient network in order to empower the Sámi people on intellectual property rights. The third objective of the micro project is to learn from partners internationally that also are facing the same challenges. As protection of intellectual property rights is a global concern there is a need to identify best practises, establish a robust international network and find strong key partners.
Objectives
The main objective is to find commmon ground and anchor future steps for protecting Sámi intellectual protery rights and how it can benefit the Sami community. The project will use a community based approach when implementing the project. Including grass-root organizations is important and crucial for the project to be successful.
A system that protects Sámi culture will secure the authenticity of Sámi products. That will enable small SMEs to take out a higher price for high quality products as well as that will guarantee the buyer that the products is made by an indigenous person. This could potentially create jobs both in the cultural and tourism sector, traditionally a sector where women and youth are employed.
The second objective is knowledge transfer. Traditional knowledge is a living body of knowledge that is developed, sustained and passed on from generation to generation within a community, often forming part of its cultural or spiritual identity. By strengthening the structures around Duodji as an industry, we also secure that the traditional knowledge will be transferred between generations. This will also feed into Sámi education institutions that offer higher education in duodji.
