Barley cultivation

New opportunities for Faroese farmers, breweries and bakeries

In 2016, the Agricultural Agency in the Faroe Islands together with three farmers from Streymoy and Sandoy islands sowed barley on their farms. The barley grew very well in Faroese conditions, which encouraged farmers to restart barley cultivation. The result was approximately 300kg of barley which has been used by Føroya Bjór for brewing beverages and as feed for bulls. Local restaurants were also interested in adding barley to their menus. This positive feedback from local businesses and a successful harvest motivated one more Faroese farmer to start barley cultivation.

In Saksun it has probably been more than half-century since any barley was harvested in our area. I was tremendously pleased to contribute to NORTHERN CEREALS. After working with the Agency, I went along and sowed my own barely, and I have opened my eyes to the possibilities of exploring more of the resources on my farm.
