Discover the achievements of the 2014-2020 NPA projects

Seven years of cooperation between people, communities, and organisations across thousands of kilometres made a difference in the Northern Periphery and Arctic regions.

Drone pilot training for locals on Rathlin Island

For a more participative coastal sustainable management

Rathlin Island is Northern Ireland´s only inhabited island with a population of 160 permanent residents spread across 70 households. Every year, approximately 40.000 tourists visit the island, observing the spectacular nature and a large colony of Atlantic Puffins.

The unique coastal heritage has been challenged over time by harsh weather. To address this challenge the COAST project, in close collaboration with the local community, used drones to document the coastline's natural and cultural heritage. To ensure that the community had the capacity to document the heritage again in the future, the team trained three residents to become drone pilots and filmed two locations - Doon Point and East Lighthouse. The footage was used to create 3D models which were then shared with the community and can be further used for digital archiving, modeling, and comparison. Furthermore, a digital map was created to collect information on the known natural and built heritage on the island.

Experience and other examples of using drones in Finland, Ireland, and Iceland, for more sustainable coastal management and informed decision-making were collected and presented in the Sustainable Resilient Coasts Toolkit.

Sustainable Resilient Coasts offered the opportunity to leverage ongoing community connections developed by the CCGHT COAST team, allowing to better understand the islands environment and residents. The project uncovered parts of the island’s heritage I never knew about and has inspired me to take my own drone flying knowledge and apply it to my work. The digital map has been useful to me in picking up local references and information.
