Ecoduct for reindeers

Using indigenous peoples knowledge in practice

The project developed guidelines for municipalities on how to include indigenous local knowledge in land use planning. In Sweden, a reindeer herding community provided knowledge and mapped the 350km long reindeer movement route from the coast of Bay of Bothnia to Scandinavian mountains on Norwegian – Swedish border. The herders provided necessary basis for the planning of the North Bothnia train line and negotiated the construction of ecoducts (reindeer over-passes) on E4 highway, which crosses this natural reindeer route. The Swedish Traffic Association also trained its staff in reindeer herding issues.

Gran Reindeer Herding Community

BuSK had impact in several dimensions. Gran RHC learned how to use the maps and infuse them with our knowledge. This empowered us to use the reins in planning processes and negotiations with developers. We have had great success, even leading to a new ecoduct for the reindeer, as a direct effect. The participatory method used invited professional growth and a more inclusive attitude towards experts (researchers).
