Experimenting with barley

Barley products and new distilleries

Barley cultivation started in Rassay island as a result of cooperation with Icelandic partners, who provided barley varieties adapted to northern climate and expertise in cereal farming. Through partner visits, Scottish breweries shared their expertise in beverage production and in return they learned how to produce new cereal products. Rassay Distillery was one of the new distilleries that opened in the area and started their production using the locally grown cereals.

R&B Distillers

Having opened a new distillery on the Inner Hebridean island of Raasay in 2017, R&B Distillers is keen to source some of our barley locally. This will be difficult, however, because of the lack of suitable varieties for our challenging growing conditions. The Agronomy Institute has greatly assisted our search for suitable varieties and I am encouraged that grain grew, ripened and was successfully harvested on Raasay in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
