How to address fuel poverty?

Raising awareness and increasing communities’ access to renewable energies, for a start.

Fuel poverty is a reality for many households within the UK and Ireland. The link between fuel poverty and health has long been recognized and various national schemes and programmes were established to reduce inequalities, raise awareness, and improve houses´ energy efficiency. The HANDIHEAT project tested alternative ways to replace fossil fuels for heating houses in rural areas, without expensive renovation needed. In Lisnaskea, in connection with 5 houses being refurbished, monitors were installed to collect 1-years data to inform future energy policy decisions for Northern Ireland . In addition, the project delivered 3 webinars to increase people´s knowledge about fuel poverty, renewable technologies, and community energy. For anyone interested in building insulation or installing renewable energy source systems to their houses, the project developed a toolkit showing how these systems work and their basic specifications. In the case of biogas, a calculator was created to calculate the profitability of a biogas investment.

For NIHE (Northern Ireland Housing Executive) the HANDIHEAT project kickstarted their journey towards low carbon heating and inspired them to run another project, RULET. Learning points from these two projects and their pilots will form the basis for their future heating policy and will influence future NI policy decisions around decarbonisation.
