Innovating urchin fishery
Testing new methods for urchin fishery and transportation
Greenland has abundant sea urchins, but difficulties in finding the right fishing method. Inspired by their Icelandic colleagues, Royal Greenland A/S tested a bottom dredge, which appeared to be very efficient and simple. The Icelanders came to Maniitsoq to help Greenlandic fishermen adjusting the dredge system. Through the project, Royal Greenland tested several methods for transporting live and flash-frozen sea urchins to the global markets. Even though the researchers have found a way to keep sea urchins alive for 16 days, other logistical problems needed to be addressed for sea urchin fishery to become economically viable.

Royal GreenlandThe cooperation between Royal Greenland A/S and the NPA project group has been of great value, where the access to knowledge has been crucial for optimizing experiments and exchanging gained knowledge across the region through trials and scientific research. The workshops in Iceland, Norway and Ireland have been an inspiration to how to improve already gained results in Greenland, where there have been experiments on fishery, live stockholding and transport since 2014.
