Activities related to agriculture and mineral extraction industries in the NPA areas cause significant risks to the vulnerable environment through water and land pollution. Prior to the project, the WATERPRO partners developed their specific methods for managing water runoffs, which served as a basis for creating the WATERPRO guidelines and videos to manage the agricultural and mineral extraction runoffs. Through nine pilot sites, several innovative, low cost practices were implemented and presented to the local authorities. In Finland, two pilot sites were established, one in Maaninka, researching the recovery of phosphorus in agriculture, and one in Kuopio, monitoring explosive based nitrogen emissions.

Savonia University of Applied SciencesThe Good Practice Inventory gives a comprehensive package of information on the different runoff management methods and nutrient runoff prediction models suitable in our region for controlling runoffs from agriculture. I have been utilizing it in my teaching and in regional projects as an easy source of such information. It gives valuable background information that can be used for example when designing concrete actions and to predicting their effects on preventing nutrient runoffs in agriculture.
