Retrofitting a 200 years old vicarage

Culturally, emotionally, and environmentally important renovation

Cultural heritage is part of our history and therefore also of our future. Historical buildings, due to their ages, construction, and thermal performance are perceived as “big energy spenders”. In the Faroe Islands, the Energy pathfinder project chose to retrofit a vicarage in Viðareiði to test the best practices developed by the team.

This nearly 200 years old building has a great cultural and emotional significance for the local area and serves as a residence for the priest´s family, but also as a meeting point for the local community. Before, during, and after the retrofit the Vicar and his family were involved in the retrofit, providing valuable feedback and helping to discover the building´s “weak points” that needed more attention. The residents also confirmed improved indoor climate after the retrofit. All in all, the building´s significant historical value has not only been preserved, but it has also significantly improved.

Throughout 7 demonstration sites, ENERGY PATHFINDER tested the best heritage-appropriate retrofit options and agreed that seeing the retrofits in real life was more beneficial than making decisions based on modeling and assumptions. The team has gathered the learnings in its online toolkit and a series of webinars to help owners and users of historical buildings in making the best-informed decision when retrofitting the building.
