Rock Stop visitor centre

Bringing geology closer to people

A new visitors centre, Rock Stop, has been opened and received 30 000 visitors in its first year of operation. A newly developed Geo Virtual Reality Tool (GeoVR), available in the centre, enables the visitors to virtually visit other world Geoparks. Several globally transferable Toolkits have been developed by the project partners and provide guidance on how to manage a Geopark, engage with local communities and prepare marketing information for visitors. New knowledge about the geology and the use of GeoVR acquired through training helps teachers and tour guides to deliver more informed tours and enhances children educational experience.

Thomas Foster

Lochaber Geopark

The information panels on the formation of Lochaber personally interested me to research more on large scale tectonic movement, and to opt to take Higher Geography [secondary level school]. The recent addition of the iSandbox has become a wonderful teaching resource to get younger generations interested in geography and geology.
