New skills and techniques for path maintenance
The Northern Irish team learned from their Finnish colleagues a new method for path building, based on timber. Pine branches were used to mimic existing tree roots and to keep the soil in place while fixing the Glen River path, the busiest route to Slieve Donard. The result was very well received by visitors and the team decided to continue using this new method. The team developed upland path work training courses for practitioners and managers. Rangers´ expertise in landscaping and draining systems from Slieve Gullion inspired Norwegian, Finnish and Icelandic partners to adopt new path management techniques.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) - Tourism SectionASCENT has helped us to improve how we manage tourism in the uplands more sustainably. Slieve Donard and Slieve Gullion now have sustainable paths. We will take this learning to other sites NMDDC manage and apply the same tools and techniques. ASCENT has worked well, and NMDDC can see the benefit in this type of partnership working.
