Virtual reconstruction of a medieval fishing town

Seeing Vágar in the past and in the future

The medieval fishing town of Vágar in Lofoten was the first urban center of Northern Norway and a key hub for catching Arctic cod. It is here that organised trade of stockfish to different European countries started. The CINE project has developed a virtual digital reconstruction model of how this area looked in the ice age, in the 15th century, and in the 19th century and how it will look in the future if the global temperature increases by 3 degrees.

Students from Kabevåg Junior High School have tested a game where historical photographs can be placed digitally in the physical landscape. The model was presented and discussed online (video in Norwegian) and the app will be made available as soon as the testing is finalized (early summer 2022). In the future, it will be integrated in the national museum SKREI as part of its new visitor experience.

Kabelvåg Junior High School

I experienced that my students were very pleased with the way this form of teaching was organized. They were allowed to explore and expand their experience and I observed that this contributed to engagement, excitement and improved learning. To be visually able to witness how people in the past lived in the particular place where you are actually positioned is closer to the real than reading about history in a book or look at images in the classroom. This could be the way of future learning.
